Gas mains renewal
Planned mains replacement, delivered properly.
Who we deliver for
Ninety Utilities delivers gas mains renewal and replacement works for principal contractors, gas distribution networks and delivery partners across planned network investment and replacement programmes.
We provide experienced, competent teams who understand the realities of working in live streets, around customers and within tightly managed delivery programmes.
Our focus is straightforward: safe delivery, good productivity, controlled sites and work completed to the required standard.
How we renew a gas main
The right method depends on the existing network, the condition of the main and the environment we are working in.
Where suitable, we use insertion techniques to install new polyethylene pipe within the existing main, helping reduce excavation, reinstatement and disruption. Where insertion is not appropriate, mains are replaced using open-cut excavation.
Our teams can support the full delivery sequence within their authorised scope, including site set-up, excavation, mains installation, associated service works, backfilling and reinstatement. Testing, commissioning and connection activities are coordinated with the client and other delivery teams as required.
Every scheme is planned around the realities of the street: traffic management, customer access, other buried services, programme constraints and safe working space.
The objective is simple — complete the work safely, efficiently and with as little unnecessary disruption as possible.
Materials and capability
Ninety Utilities undertakes gas mains renewal using materials, techniques and equipment appropriate to the scheme and within the competence and authorisation of the team carrying out the work.
Resources are matched to each project, with qualifications, competencies and client requirements checked before mobilisation.
We only claim capability for work we are properly equipped, competent and authorised to deliver.
Service replacement
Mains renewal often goes beyond the main itself. Where included within the project scope, our teams undertake associated service replacement and transfer works alongside the mains programme.
This is planned as part of the overall delivery sequence, with consideration given to customer access, excavation requirements, existing services and the commissioning strategy.
Our approach is to keep mains and service activity coordinated so that sections are completed efficiently and streets are not left open longer than necessary.
Safe, well-controlled excavation
Safe, well-controlled excavation is fundamental to the work we do. Excavations are planned around existing underground services, highway conditions, pedestrian movement, traffic management and the space available to work.
Our teams work to agreed excavation procedures and client requirements, with suitable controls in place for service avoidance, edge protection, access, spoil management and the safe operation of plant.
Sites are expected to remain organised, secure and presentable throughout the works — not just when the job is finished.
Good reinstatement is part of the job
Excavations are backfilled and reinstated in accordance with the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH) together with client specifications and relevant highway authority requirements. Depending on the contract, this may include interim and permanent reinstatement.
We expect completed areas to be safe, tidy and properly finished. Where a defect is identified, it is recorded, managed and rectified through the agreed contract process.
Working in live streets
Gas mains renewal takes place where people live, work, drive and walk. That means technical delivery is only part of the job.
Our teams work with the wider programme to manage traffic, pedestrian routes, access to homes and businesses and the practical impact of the works on the surrounding area. Worksites are kept controlled and organised, with clear communication between supervisors, operatives, clients and other contractors.
We understand that the way a site is managed reflects on everyone involved in the programme.
Programme delivery
No two streets are the same. Delivery output can be affected by:
- the existing network
- number and complexity of services
- excavation requirements
- traffic management
- ground conditions
- existing underground utilities
- customer access
- highway restrictions
- testing and commissioning requirements
- third-party interfaces
For that reason, we do not publish generic production figures that may not reflect the actual scheme.
For tender submissions and programme discussions, Ninety Utilities can provide project-specific methodology, resource proposals and delivery information based on the scope of work.
Competent people. Clear responsibilities.
Utilities work depends on competence. Our operatives are assigned to activities based on their qualifications, experience, authorisations and the requirements of the client.
Supervision is built around clear responsibility for the work being undertaken, with teams briefed on the scope, risks, programme and site-specific requirements before work begins.
Where specialist competence or additional authorisation is required, this is identified as part of mobilisation rather than left to be resolved on site.
Safety and assurance
Safety is integrated into how we deliver the work. Projects are supported through risk assessment, method statements, briefings, supervision and site assurance appropriate to the scope and client requirements.
Our approach is practical. Controls need to work on the street, not just read well in a document. We expect teams to understand the task, understand the risks and know what is expected before work starts.
Where conditions change, work is reviewed and the method adjusted before continuing.
Working as part of your programme
Ninety Utilities is set up to work as part of a wider delivery structure. We work with principal contractors, gas distribution networks and delivery partners, fitting into established programme controls, reporting requirements and client standards.
That means understanding where our responsibility starts and finishes, communicating clearly with the teams around us and providing the information needed to manage the wider programme.
We are not trying to be the biggest contractor in the supply chain. We are focused on being a dependable one.
